Master Gunnery Sergeant Thomas M. Johnson

Master Gunnery Sergeant Johnson was born in Detroit, MI, March 15, 1981. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on September 04, 2002,
reporting to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC graduating recruit training on April 04, 2003. Upon graduation, he attended
Marine Combat Training (MCT) - East. After completion of MCT, he received orders to Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas to
become a Correctional Specialist. Once his training was complete he was assigned to Brig Company, Marine Corps Base, Camp Butler,
Okinawa, Japan. During this period he was promoted to Lance Corporal (LCpl) and served as a Correctional Custody Unit Instructor for
Brig Company.

In August 2004, LCpl Johnson received orders to Brig Company, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he filled the
billet of Correctional Specialist. In June 2005 LCpl Johnson, was promoted to Corporal (Cpl) and filled the billet of Prisoner Services
Funds and Valuables Custodian, as well as Prisoner Services NCOIC. In April 2006, Cpl Johnson was promoted to Sergeant (Sgt). In
March 2007, Sgt Johnson received orders to the Marine Corps Absentee Collection Unit (MCACU), Headquarters Marine Corps
(HQMC), Washington, DC where he filled the billet of Chief Deserter Investigator and Prisoner Escort, responsible for all OCONUS and
long-term Marine Deserter cases, some dating back to World War II. In February 2010, Sgt Johnson was promoted to Staff Sergeant
(SSgt) and filled the billet of Assistant SNCOIC. In July 2011, SSgt Johnson was part of the first Marines to stand up the Marine
Detachment, Naval Consolidated Brig Chesapeake, Virginia where he immediately assumed the billet of Command Duty Officer, an
E-7 billet comprised of leading and supervising the daily operations of the Brig, which included a section of 20 Marines and Sailors,
ensuring the safety and security of over 100 Department of Defense prisoners. During his time at Chesapeake, additional billets held
were Training Chief and Armed Prisoner Escort.

In December 2014, SSgt Johnson executed orders to 3D Law Enforcement Battalion (3D LE BN), III Marine Headquarters Group, III
Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF), Okinawa, Japan where he received the billet of Detention Operations Specialist. Additional billets
during his time with III MEF include H&S Company Gunnery Sergeant and Custodial Support Element SNCOIC. In August 2016, SSgt
Johnson was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant (GySgt). Throughout his time with III MEF, GySgt Johnson advised numerous
INDOPACOM foreign security forces in support of security cooperation. In December 2017, GySgt Johnson executed orders to Marine
Corps Security Cooperation Group (MCSCG), Fort Story, VA where he assumed the billet of Instructor overseeing the Marine Advisor
Course (MAC), responsible for training/certifying future Marine Foreign Security Force Advisors. During his tenure, he held billets of
Team Chief and MAC Chief responsible for a 30-Marine instructor section responsible for the development of curriculum, instructing,
and evaluation of the entire MAC. In June 2021, GySgt Johnson was promoted to Master Sergeant (MSgt). Throughout his time with
MCSCG, MSgt Johnson trained over 966 Marines/Sailors in support of Advisor/Security Cooperation Teams deploying as part of the
Marine Corps Training Mission - KSA/UAE, Georgian Deployment Program, Taskforce Southwest, and Taskforce Anbar, among others.

In August 2021, MSgt Johnson executed orders to the Marine Corps Installations-East (MCI-East) Regional Brig, Camp Lejeune, where
he immediately filled the billet of Operations Chief, overseeing the safety, security, and welfare of a prisoner population of (75), while
managing the professional development of (60) Marines. On 14 March 2025, MSgt Johnson was promoted to the rank of Master
Gunnery Sergeant (MGySgt) and received orders to Marine Corps Installations Command, Installations & Logistics, Marine Corps
Corrections Branch, Law Enforcement Branch, Washington, D. C. to assume the billet of Occupational Field Specialist, Operations
Chief. During his tenure with the MCI-East Regional Brig, MGySgt Johnson filled the billets of Brig Officer, Brig Supervisor, First
Sergeant, Programs Chief, and Administrative Chief; ensuring the successful transition of the confinement facility from a Pre-trial
Confinement Facility to Level-I Confinement Facility during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

During his career MGySgt Johnson earned an Associates Degree in Arts from Campbell University (2006), a Bachelors Degree in
Security Management from American Military University (2020), and has a 1 October 2025 graduation date (October 2025) to earn his
Masters Degree in Management. He is married to his wife, Nicole and has two children - Abigail and Matthew.
